San Francisco Police Officer Brittney Taylor Wounded in Bayview Shootout After High-Speed Pursuit
SAN FRANCISCO, CA โ A dramatic sequence of events starting with an East Bay robbery and culminating in a high-speed vehicle pursuit ended in a violent shootout in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood. The incident left a veteran San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) officer and a suspect hospitalized with critical, life-threatening injuries.
Pursuit Across the Bay
The incident began at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2026. SFPD officers received alerts regarding a vehicle linked to an armed robbery in the East Bay crossing into San Francisco. Patrol units spotted the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Mission Street and First Street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver refused to pull over, accelerating away and initiating a high-speed pursuit through city streets.
The Shootout on Bayshore Boulevard
The chase concluded when the fleeing vehicle became disabled near the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue. As officers approached the vehicle, the driver opened fire. Officer Brittney Taylor, a member of the responding unit, was struck multiple times by gunfire. Other officers returned fire, striking a passenger inside the suspect's car. The driver attempted to flee on foot but was quickly captured and arrested by officers.
Injuries and Community Recovery
Both Officer Taylor and the injured passenger were rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening wounds. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Norris Reed III, was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, along with several robbery and weapons charges. Officer Taylor underwent emergency surgery and survived the critical initial phase. After weeks of recovery, she was released from the hospital on June 18, 2026, greeted by a guard of honor consisting of her fellow officers and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.
