Historic Mission District Taqueria El Faro Devastated by Back-to-Back Break-ins

SAN FRANCISCO — El Faro, the historic and beloved Mission District taqueria widely credited with inventing the legendary San Francisco "super burrito" in 1961, has been targeted by a series of devastating, back-to-back break-ins. The restaurant, located at 2399 Folsom Street, suffered three separate burglaries in the span of a single week, raising deep concerns over business security in the neighborhood.

A Week of Crime

The crime spree began on the night of Saturday, October 5, 2024, when intruders smashed the restaurant's glass doors, entered the premises, and ransacked the office. Less than 24 hours later, on Sunday, October 6, thieves returned to break in again. During these first two incidents, the burglars stole sensitive tax documents and made off with approximately $20,000 in cash that was stored in a secure cabinet.

Adding to the business's misfortune, a third break-in occurred just one week later, on Sunday, October 13, 2024. In each instance, the business was left with shattered glass, damaged property, and a mounting sense of vulnerability.

Owner's Anguish and Community Support

Raymunda Ramirez, who has owned and operated El Faro for decades, was deeply shaken by the relentless break-ins. In the immediate aftermath, she expressed profound sadness and fear for her safety, admitting that she was seriously considering selling the business and closing the restaurant for good.

"I don't feel safe here anymore. You work so hard to serve the community, and in one week they take everything. It makes you want to give up." — Raymunda Ramirez, Owner of El Faro

News of the potential closure sent shockwaves through the Mission District. Regular customers, local activists, and community members rallied around the historic establishment, offering support, organizing fundraisers, and urging Ramirez to keep the doors open. Spurred by this overwhelming wave of community love, Ramirez and her staff announced they would push forward, repair the damage, and continue serving their famous burritos.

San Francisco police are actively investigating the burglaries, reviewing security camera footage, and seeking witnesses in hopes of apprehending the perpetrators behind this targeted spree.
