Retail Crimes Highlight Business Vulnerabilities in California and Texas
SAN GABRIEL, California — Retail business owners and law enforcement agencies in California and Texas are dealing with a wave of brazen commercial burglaries, prompting renewed calls for tougher legal penalties and stronger security measures to protect local shops.
San Gabriel Wig Shop Targeted in Series of Burglaries
In San Gabriel, California, Margarita Torres, the owner of Terry’s Wigs, has expressed growing despair over the safety of her shop. Torres has operated the specialty store for over three decades, providing essential wigs and hairpieces to clients undergoing chemotherapy or dealing with medical hair loss conditions like alopecia. However, her shop has become a frequent target for criminals, suffering at least ten separate burglaries and retail theft incidents since 2020.
The repeated break-ins have inflicted a heavy financial and emotional toll on Torres. In one notable incident, suspects used crowbars to shatter the shop's glass front doors, stealing thousands of dollars in high-end inventory. Torres noted a frustrating trend where thieves seem to know the legal system well, deliberately stealing merchandise valued under the state's $950 felony threshold to ensure they only face misdemeanor charges if caught. With insurance premiums soaring and security upgrades failing to stop the break-ins, Torres admitted she has considered closing the store for good.
The situation attracted the attention of Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who visited Terry’s Wigs and declared it a 'protected business.' Under this designation, county prosecutors and retail theft task forces will prioritize cases involving the shop, using new legal tools under California's Proposition 36 to hold repeat offenders accountable.
Truck Ramming Attempt at Katy, Texas Academy Store
Meanwhile, in Katy, Texas, a similarly bold crime unfolded at an Academy Sports + Outdoors store located near the Grand Parkway. Local authorities reported that a 19-year-old suspect, acting in concert with three juveniles, drove a pick-up truck directly through the front entrance of the retail store in the middle of the night.
The impact shattered the glass storefront and caused extensive structural damage. Investigators believe the group aimed to breach the store quickly to steal firearms and other high-value merchandise. However, the store's security protocols and reinforced gun cabinets successfully prevented the suspects from accessing any weapons. Harris County Sheriff's deputies and local officers arrived quickly, blocking the damaged entrance with tow trucks and police cruisers. The four suspects were arrested shortly after the attempt and now face multiple felony charges, including criminal mischief and attempted burglary.
