Escaped Chilean National Recaptured in Mecca After High-Profile Orange County Burglary Case
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — A Chilean national serving a prison sentence for a high-profile Orange County residential burglary and subsequent wrong-way freeway crash has been recaptured after escaping from a California conservation camp.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Alejandro Tobarfuentes, walked away from the Francisquito Conservation Camp in Los Angeles County on Sunday, November 9, 2025. Following his escape, a multi-agency manhunt was launched by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) in partnership with the Orange County District Attorney's Office (OCDA).
Burglary and Freeway Collision Context
Tobarfuentes was serving a sentence of four years and eight months in state prison. He had pleaded guilty in April 2025 to felony charges of first-degree residential burglary, possession of a forged identification card, and possession of burglary tools stemming from a June 8, 2024 break-in at a residence in San Juan Capistrano. During that burglary, Tobarfuentes and an accomplice stole a safe, designer handbags, and jewelry.
When sheriff's deputies attempted to apprehend the suspects after the burglary, Tobarfuentes engaged in a high-speed pursuit. He drove a Mini Cooper the wrong way on a freeway, narrowly missing a deputy's patrol car before slamming head-on into a Toyota Camry. The driver of the Camry suffered serious, long-term injuries. Initially, Tobarfuentes and his accomplice used fake Venezuelan identification cards to mislead investigators, but their true identities as Chilean nationals were eventually uncovered.
The Recapture in Mecca
The search for the escapee ended on Thursday evening, November 13, 2025. Acting on a lead generated by OCDA investigators, CDCR agents located and arrested Tobarfuentes without incident in the desert community of Mecca, California. Following his arrest, he was immediately transported to the California Institution for Men in Chino.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer commended the investigators for their relentless pursuit of Tobarfuentes, noting that the escaped convict posed a significant risk to public safety. Additional charges related to the escape are expected to be filed.
