Smash-and-Grab Epidemic: A Look at the Relentless Burglaries and Violence Targeting Seattle Cannabis Shops
Seattle's cannabis retailers are facing an unprecedented security crisis as a series of highly destructive smash-and-grab burglaries and violent robberies have targeted dispensaries across the city over the last two years. The incidents, which span from early 2024 to early 2026, highlight the escalating tactics of criminals and the growing danger posed to store employees.
The Rise of Vehicle-Ramming Burglaries
Criminals have increasingly turned to heavy vehicles as battering rams to breach the security of local dispensaries. In February 2024, surveillance footage captured a flatbed truck backing directly into a south Seattle pot shop, shattering the storefront. Once inside, thieves quickly loaded an entire ATM onto the truck before fleeing the scene. Just a month later, in March 2024, another crash-and-grab resulted in over $15,000 in stolen inventory and structural damage.
The trend continued into mid-2025. In June, a North Seattle dispensary was heavily damaged when suspects repeatedly rammed a car into the entrance to gain access. The repeated impacts destroyed the storefront security gates, allowing intruders to ransack the premises in what police described as an apparent smash-and-grab burglary.
Escalation to Violence
While early incidents focused primarily on property damage and quick thefts, the situation took a dangerous turn in January 2026. During a theft at a Seattle pot shop, a store worker was run over by the suspect's vehicle as they attempted to flee. The worker sustained injuries, prompting the shop's owner to offer a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
Call for Increased Security and Support
The persistent threat has left business owners calling for stronger law enforcement action and policy changes. Due to federal banking restrictions, cannabis businesses often carry high amounts of cash, making them prime targets for ATM thefts and armed robberies. As the violence escalates, the industry continues to push for protective measures to safeguard both their property and their workers.
