'It Keeps Happening': Ballard Mandarin Broken Into for the Third Time as Crime Waves Impact Local Businesses
SEATTLE, WA โ Small business owners in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood are expressing growing frustration after another commercial burglary. Ballard Mandarin, a beloved family-owned restaurant located at 5500 8th Avenue NW, was broken into for the third time, resulting in thousands of dollars in damages and stolen property.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, April 3, 2024, at approximately 6:30 a.m. Surveillance video captured two individuals forcing entry into the premises.
Financial Losses and Local Crime Wave
According to restaurant manager Wendy Pham, the burglars targeted the cash register and the bar area, stealing cash and premium liquor. The total financial impact of the break-in is estimated between $5,000 and $7,000. This incident is part of an ongoing pattern of property crime affecting businesses on the same block. Just weeks prior, on March 9, 2024, the neighboring barbershop, The Singing Barber, was broken into, and the owner lost nearly $12,000 in essential hair-cutting tools.
"It keeps happening," a community member remarked, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by Ballard's merchant corridor.
Calls for Political Accountability
The repeated burglaries have ignited heated community debates regarding public safety and local governance. In response to the wave of property crimes, local business owners and residents have criticized Seattle City Councilmember Dan Strauss, demanding more robust law enforcement presence and support. Councilmember Strauss declined on-camera interviews but issued a written statement acknowledging the concerns and pointing to storefront security grant programs.
