Starkville: Trio Arrested for Car Burglaries Following Late-Night Reports
A proactive response from alert residents and swift police action led to the arrest of three individuals suspected of a string of auto burglaries in Starkville. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of vehicle break-ins in residential areas, particularly apartment complexes.
Suspects Caught "Door Checking"
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday morning, at approximately 3:10 a.m. Starkville police officers were dispatched to the Ferndale Manor apartments located on Lynn Lane. The call was prompted by vigilant residents who reported seeing multiple individuals walking through the parking lot and actively pulling on vehicle door handles—a common tactic used by car burglars looking for unlocked vehicles.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement, the suspects attempted to flee the scene, running toward a nearby apartment complex to evade capture. However, officers established a perimeter and quickly apprehended the three men.
Arrests and Additional Charges
The Starkville Police Department identified the arrested individuals as 23-year-old Davonta McDonald of Camden, 19-year-old Xavier Jackson of Carthage, and 19-year-old Keomar Carmichael of Kosciusko. All three face charges related to auto burglary.
During the arrests, the situation escalated for one of the suspects. Police reported that Keomar Carmichael was found to be in possession of a stolen firearm, leading to an additional, severe felony charge. The investigation is far from over; authorities are currently looking into similar auto burglary incidents reported recently at the Lakeside Apartments and the Oaklyn Apartments to determine if this trio is connected. Police have indicated that more charges are highly possible as the investigation progresses.
Prevention: Securing Vehicles in Shared Parking
Apartment complex parking lots are prime targets for "door checkers" due to the high density of vehicles. Residents must be proactive to avoid becoming victims:
- The "9 PM Routine": Make it a nightly habit to check your vehicle. Ensure all doors are locked, windows are fully rolled up, and the alarm is set before heading to bed.
- Remove All Valuables: Never leave firearms, electronics, purses, or even loose change visible in the car. If suspects see something of value, they will break a window instead of just checking the handle.
- Report Suspicious Activity: The arrests in this case were possible because someone called 911 immediately upon seeing suspicious behavior. Do not hesitate to report individuals wandering through parking lots at odd hours.
- Community Awareness: Apartment managers should ensure parking lots are well-lit and consider installing visible security cameras to deter opportunistic thieves.
