St. Louis: Man Charged After $25K Forklift Stolen from Warehouse

A lengthy investigation into a high-value commercial theft in north St. Louis has culminated in felony charges and the recovery of stolen heavy machinery. The case highlights the vulnerabilities of commercial warehouses to organized theft rings.

$25,000 Forklift Stolen from CubeWork

According to a probable cause statement from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), the initial burglary occurred on September 18, 2025. The target was CubeWork, a commercial facility located in the 600 block of E. Redbud Avenue. Surveillance footage from the business captured the crime in progress. A suspect, later identified by police as 27-year-old Xavier D. Simms, was seen pulling up to the building's garage door in a distinctive black Dodge Ram equipped with aftermarket rims and towing a trailer. Working in concert with unidentified accomplices, the suspects managed to load a forklift, valued at approximately $25,000, onto the trailer before fleeing the scene.

Search Warrant Leads to Recovery

The breakthrough in the case came several months later. On June 1, a detective with the North County Police Cooperative contacted the SLMPD regarding the theft. This followed the execution of a search warrant at properties in the 1600 block of Glenchort Avenue and the 6600 block of Latta Place, areas reportedly associated with Simms. During the search, investigators hit the jackpot, recovering the stolen forklift along with three trailers.

Police noted that the external Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the forklift had been intentionally scratched off. However, the internal VIN remained intact and matched the equipment stolen from CubeWork. Furthermore, one of the recovered trailers matched the one seen in the surveillance video from the night of the theft. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office has officially charged Simms with second-degree burglary and stealing $25,000 or more. He was granted bond pending his court appearances.

Prevention: Securing Heavy Machinery

Heavy machinery and construction equipment are prime targets for thieves due to their high resale value and utility. Businesses must implement strict security protocols to protect these assets:

  • Immobilization Devices: Never rely solely on the ignition key. Install hidden kill switches, fuel shut-off valves, or battery disconnects on all heavy machinery.
  • GPS Tracking: Equip all valuable machinery with concealed GPS tracking units. In the event of a theft, these devices are crucial for rapid recovery, as demonstrated in many similar cases.
  • Secure Storage: Whenever possible, park equipment inside a locked, alarmed warehouse overnight. If equipment must be left outdoors, park it in a well-lit, fenced, and monitored yard, positioned in a way that makes it difficult to tow away.
  • VIN Etching and Marking: Etch the VIN or a custom identification number into multiple, hard-to-find locations on the equipment. This makes it significantly harder for thieves to completely scrub the machine's identity, aiding in positive identification if recovered.
