DNA on Discarded Hat Leads to Homicide Charges in South St. Louis Gas Station Shooting

ST. LOUIS, MO — Investigators have officially charged a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred during an armed robbery at a south St. Louis gas station, thanks to a DNA match obtained from a piece of clothing left at the crime scene.

The tragedy unfolded during an armed robbery at the business. A customer at the gas station attempted to intervene or pursue the suspect as they fled. During the ensuing confrontation, the robber pulled a firearm and fired multiple times, striking and killing the customer. In the chaos of the escape, the assailant dropped a hat near the scene.

For years, police worked to identify the gunman. The breakthrough came when forensic experts successfully extracted a DNA profile from the discarded hat. The profile matched a known offender in the database, leading detectives directly to the suspect.
