Two Men Arrested for Stealing Cooking Oil from St. Petersburg Restaurant
ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Two men are facing theft charges after St. Petersburg Police caught them attempting to siphon and steal commercial cooking oil from a local restaurant's disposal unit.
The incident occurred late in the evening of May 23, 2024. According to police reports, restaurant staff noticed suspicious activity near the back of the establishment where used cooking oil is stored. Officers dispatched to the scene discovered the suspects utilizing specialized pumping equipment to transfer the oil into a large container in their vehicle.
The Black Market for Used Fryer Oil
While the theft of used cooking oil may sound unusual, it has become an increasingly common target for thieves due to its value on the biofuel black market. Recycled cooking oil can be refined into biodiesel, making it a lucrative target for organized theft rings operating across the state.
"Used cooking oil has real commodity value," noted a local law enforcement official. "Thieves target these bins because restaurants often leave them outdoors and unsecured, making them easy targets for quick siphoning operations."
Charges and Prevention
The two suspects were arrested at the scene and charged with grand theft and possession of burglary tools. The St. Petersburg Police Department is encouraging local restaurant owners to secure their waste oil storage tanks with heavy locks and install security cameras to deter future theft attempts.
