Hillsborough Deputies Arrest Tampa Man for Stealing Over $8,000 in Jewelry from Walmart

TAMPA, FL — A Tampa resident is behind bars after Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) deputies connected him to multiple high-value jewelry thefts at a local Walmart store, totaling thousands of dollars.

Deputies arrested 33-year-old Mark Anthony Vega on Thursday, November 21, 2024, following a week-long investigation conducted by the HCSO Organized Retail Theft Unit. The investigation was initiated on November 14, 2024, after store security reported a pattern of major losses in the jewelry department at the Walmart located on Gunn Highway in Tampa.

According to detectives, Vega targeted the retail location on two separate occasions:

• October 21, 2024: Vega successfully stole and left the store with jewelry valued at $1,643.
• November 5, 2024: Vega returned to the same department, concealed jewelry valued at $7,110 inside his backpack, and exited the store without making any attempt to pay for the items.

Upon his arrest, Vega admitted to investigators that he had stolen the items and subsequently sold them to various local pawn shops. He faces several felony charges, including grand retail theft (over $750), dealing in stolen property, and presenting false verification on pawnbroker forms.

Sheriff Reaffirms Stance on Retail Crime

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister released a statement following the arrest, reaffirming the agency's commitment to protecting local businesses and prosecuting retail thieves to the fullest extent of the law.

"Retail theft is not a minor infraction; it impacts local business owners, employees, and our entire community through increased prices," Sheriff Chronister said. "Our Organized Retail Theft Unit will continue to identify, track, and arrest those who think they can steal with impunity."

Vega is currently being held at the Falkenburg Road Jail facility pending his initial court appearance.
