Toledo Credit Unions Targeted in Wave of ATM Thefts and Break-ins

TOLEDO, Ohio — Local financial institutions are facing a challenging wave of property crimes as the Toledo Police Department continues to investigate a series of ATM thefts and break-ins targeting community credit unions. The string of incidents has not only caused significant financial and structural damage but has also disrupted vital banking services for residents in the West Toledo and central city neighborhoods.

The most recent setback struck the Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union (TUFCU) on Dorr Street. The branch had been closed for approximately a year undergoing extensive repairs following a previous vehicle crash and ATM theft. Just as administrators prepared for a highly anticipated reopening, the branch was hit by its fourth ATM break-in, once again forcing a delay in restoring normal operations. Executive director Elaae M. and other credit union representatives expressed deep frustration at the recurring crimes, noting the substantial impact on members who rely on the local branch for daily financial access.

Meanwhile, West Toledo institutions have also been targeted. On October 13, 2025, police responded to a theft from the Sun Federal Credit Union ATM on North Reynolds Road. Security footage from that incident captured at least two suspects in a red Kia sedan—distinguishable by a silver passenger-side rearview mirror—who successfully broke into the machine. Toledo Police have released surveillance photos and are asking the public for assistance. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
