Toledo Woman Fights Off Bedroom Intruder, Obtains Firearm for Self-Defense

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo resident is speaking out about a harrowing home invasion, crediting her quick instincts and self-defense training with saving her life, while taking new steps to ensure her home remains secure. Sugar Vermonte woke up in the dead of night to a homeowner’s worst nightmare: an intruder inside her bedroom.

According to police reports, the incident occurred during the early morning hours of July 25, 2025. Vermonte was asleep when she was startled awake by movement in her room. Looking up, she saw a man crawling on all fours toward her nightstand, attempting to steal her purse. When Vermonte confronted the intruder, he lunged at her and threw a punch. Drawing on self-defense training she had received years prior, Vermonte managed to block the strike, grapple with the man, and force him out of the room. The suspect fled the house, taking only a small amount of marijuana.

In the wake of the terrifying confrontation, Vermonte made the immediate decision to secure a firearm for protection, visiting Bear Arms Armory to purchase a handgun and register for safety training. "I refuse to live in fear in my own home," Vermonte stated, adding that she suspects the intruder may have been an acquaintance. Police are continuing to investigate the break-in and have urged residents to keep doors and windows locked at all times.
