Man Arrested for Attempted Murder Following Ambush Shooting at West Palm Beach Gas Station
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. โ A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder following a violent ambush and shooting at a West Palm Beach gas station. The suspect, identified as Vinesh Ishwar Maharaj, was apprehended following a multi-county investigation that spanned from Broward County to Palm Beach County.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on December 23, 2024, at a Marathon gas station located in the 1800 block of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. Surveillance footage from the business showed a masked suspect, dressed entirely in black, waiting outside the convenience store. Investigators state that Maharaj targeted the victim under the belief that they were carrying a substantial amount of cash.
When the victim returned to his vehicle, a struggle ensued as the suspect attempted to commit a robbery. During the altercation, Maharaj allegedly drew a firearm and shot the victim, inflicting life-threatening injuries. Emergency services rushed the victim to St. Mary's Medical Center, where they were listed in critical condition.
West Palm Beach detectives launched an intensive investigation, identifying Maharaj as the primary suspect through surveillance footage, mobile phone location data, and a red Jaguar sedan registered in his name that was observed at the crime scene. On March 14, 2025, authorities tracked Maharaj as he traveled from Broward County back into Palm Beach County. Officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop on Interstate 95, where Maharaj was taken into custody without further incident.
Maharaj faces multiple felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, attempted robbery with a firearm, and the unlawful use of a two-way communications device. He is being held without bond in the Palm Beach County Jail.
