Serial Thief Sentenced After Targeting Three Bradford Homes in an Hour
A Morning Spree of Attempted Break-Ins
A serial thief has been sentenced to 20 months in prison after a chaotic morning spree where he targeted three separate homes within an hour. James Keat, 47, from Marley Court in Bingley, was armed with a metal crowbar during the early morning hours of May 13. Prosecutor Brogan Riley detailed the timeline of the offences.
At 6.22 am, Keat attempted to force open the front door of a property on New Close Road in Shipley. He was startled and fled after pressing his face against a kitchen window, which triggered an alarm. Shortly after, at 6.45 am, residents on Bracken Grange Court heard suspicious noises and discovered Keat trying to force their back door using a metal bar. Upon being spotted, he ran away again. Finally, at 7.15 am, a resident on Nab Wood Crescent heard a loud bang and caught Keat smashing a kitchen window with a metal object. After being shouted at, Keat mumbled a response before jumping over a nearby fence.
Arrest and Court Sentencing
Police successfully arrested Keat on Nab Wood Terrace, subsequently locating the grey metal crowbar in a nearby bin. During his arrest, Keat became highly abusive and non-compliant, directing "offensive, degrading, and insulting" racist remarks at a police officer. In court, he pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted burglary alongside racially aggravated harassment. The court learned that Keat’s criminal record spans from 1989 to 2025, comprising 35 convictions for 134 separate offences.
In mitigation, defence counsel Olivia Fraser highlighted Keat's struggles with significant trauma and long-term drug addiction, suggesting these factors were at the centre of his offending. Despite his remorse and aspirations to become a drug worker and bereavement counsellor, Miss Recorder Kama Melly KC determined the offences were far too severe for a suspended sentence. Noting the profound psychological impact on the victims, particularly families with young children, she handed down a 20-month prison sentence.
How to Protect Your Home from Opportunistic Thieves
As this case highlights, determined burglars can strike multiple times in quick succession. Enhance your home security by implementing the following measures:
- Install visible burglar alarms; they are proven deterrents that can prompt a thief to abandon a break-in attempt.
- Ensure all external doors and windows are fitted with heavy-duty locks and are locked securely even when you are home.
- Fit security lighting with motion sensors around the perimeter of your property.
- Keep tools, ladders, and metal objects securely locked away so they cannot be used to force entry into your own home.
- Consider installing security cameras or smart doorbells to monitor and record activity around your property.
