Serial Burglar Targets Newcastle City Centre Café and Student Accommodation Block
A prolific burglar has been arrested and charged after targeting a popular independent café and a student accommodation block in Newcastle city centre within the space of a few days. The consecutive break-ins caused significant disruption to local business owners and raised safety concerns among the local student community.
Double Raid in the Heart of Newcastle
The wave of burglaries began when the offender forced entry through a back window of the city centre café, ransacking the till area and stealing tablet computers used for the point-of-sale system. Just days later, the same individual managed to tail residents into a secure student accommodation building nearby, accessing communal areas and making off with personal belongings, including laptops and parcels left in the lobby.
Police Track Down the Suspect
Northumbria Police launched an investigation, utilizing CCTV footage from both the café and the accommodation security network. Officers quickly identified a suspect known to local authorities for similar property crimes. Forensic evidence left at the café's entry point confirmed the suspect's identity, leading to a swift arrest by local neighborhood policing teams.
"We understand the distress and disruption that business and residential burglaries cause. Working closely with city centre partners, our officers were able to identify and apprehend the suspect quickly."
— Inspector of the Newcastle City Centre Policing Team
Security Warnings Issued
Following the burglaries, local police have urged city centre business owners to reinforce window locks and avoid leaving cash or valuable electronics on display overnight. Student accommodation providers have also been advised to remind residents about the dangers of 'tailgating'—where unauthorized individuals follow residents through secure main entrance doors—to maintain building security.
