Newly Opened York Shop Targeted in Early Morning Burglary

Smash-and-Grab at New Savers Store

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses following an early-morning burglary at a newly opened retail store in the busy York suburb of Acomb. The incident occurred at the Savers store on Front Street at approximately 1:50 am on May 25. Thieves brazenly smashed the large front shop window to gain entry to the premises. The ground outside was left littered with broken glass as officers stood guard at the scene for much of the following day.

High-Value Perfume Targeted

Once inside the store, the burglars specifically targeted high-value cosmetics, successfully stealing an undisclosed number of perfume bottles before fleeing the scene. A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police stated: โ€œWe are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area at this time.โ€ Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12260094932.

Securing High-Value Retail Stock

Perfumes and cosmetics are highly targeted items in retail burglaries due to their high resale value and ease of transport. Retailers should consider the following preventative measures:

  • Install robust, heavy-duty roller shutters over all external windows and doors when the store is closed.
  • Store high-value items, such as perfumes and premium cosmetics, in locked, reinforced display cabinets.
  • Consider removing the most expensive stock from the shop floor entirely overnight, storing it in a secure back room or safe.
  • Apply forensic property marking liquids, such as SmartWater, to valuable stock packaging to link stolen goods directly back to the store.
