Stolen Mt. Bachelor Ski Pass and Video Footage Lead to Arrest of Bend Serial Burglary Suspect
BEND, OR โ A series of residential burglaries in Bend has been solved after a stolen Mt. Bachelor ski pass and residential security camera footage led police directly to a suspect. The Bend Police Department announced the arrest of 61-year-old Donald Richard Kaine, a Bend local, who is now facing multiple felony charges in connection with at least three separate home break-ins in the area.
Security Footage Captured Suspect
The investigation began in early December 2025 when a homeowner reported a burglary and provided high-definition security camera footage to investigators. The video showed an older male suspect entering the property and later exiting with a large, reusable tote bag filled with stolen items, including electronics and personal belongings. Officers circulated the images within the department and neighborhood watch groups to identify the suspect.
Ski Pass Links Suspect to Multiple Crimes
A breakthrough occurred when patrol officers spotted a man matching the suspect's description walking in Bend. Upon contacting the man, identified as Donald Richard Kaine, officers conducted a search and discovered a Mt. Bachelor ski pass in his possession. The ski pass did not belong to Kaine; instead, it was registered to a victim of a separate burglary that had been reported earlier in the season. This crucial piece of evidence linked Kaine to multiple active burglary cases across the city.
Kaine was arrested without incident and booked into the Deschutes County Jail. He faces multiple counts of first-degree burglary, first-degree theft, criminal trespass, and criminal mischief. Bend Police officers have recovered several stolen items from Kaine's possession and are working to return them to their rightful owners. Authorities are urging residents to register the serial numbers of valuable items and keep digital records of unique belongings like season ski passes, which can prove invaluable in tracking stolen property and securing criminal convictions.
