Tragic Awbrey Butte Home Invasion: Suspect Zachary Douglas Dies After Balcony Fall
BEND, OR โ A high-end residential neighborhood in Bend became the scene of a tragic and violent confrontation late Thursday night, March 12, 2026. The incident, which unfolded in the prestigious Awbrey Butte area, resulted in the death of a home invasion suspect who fell from a balcony during a struggle with the property owner. The Bend Police Department, alongside regional emergency services, responded to a flurry of 911 calls reporting a burglary in progress and a physical fight at a home in the 3500 block of NW Braid Drive.
Home Confrontation and Violent Struggle
According to official reports released by the Bend Police Department, the homeowner confronted an intruder who had breached the residence. The suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Zachary Dale Zamzow Douglas, a resident of Bend, engaged in a physical struggle with the homeowner. During the physical altercation, which took place near the home's second-story balcony, the suspect fell over the railing. Despite sustaining significant injuries from the fall, Douglas managed to stand up and flee the property on foot, disappearing into the dark of the surrounding neighborhood.
First responders arrived at the residence within minutes. Paramedics treated the homeowner for various non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the struggle. The homeowner was transported via ambulance to St. Charles Bend hospital, where they were treated and released early the following morning. Police quickly secured the crime scene and established a perimeter, utilizing K-9 units and patrol officers to search the nearby streets and wooded areas for the injured intruder.
Police Search and Discovery at Golf Course
Approximately half an hour after the initial confrontation, officers searching the area located Douglas on the grounds of the nearby Awbrey Glen Golf Course. The suspect was unresponsive and suffering from life-threatening injuries related to the fall. Despite immediate medical assistance and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performed by officers and responding paramedics, Douglas was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators confirmed that no firearms were used during the initial altercation at the home, and they are continuing to piece together the events that led to the break-in.
