Investigation Confirms Awbrey Butte Home Intrusion Suspect Died Following Balcony Fall and Golf Course Flight
BEND, OR โ Authorities have released new findings regarding the death of a burglary suspect who fell from an Awbrey Butte balcony on March 12, 2026. Following an autopsy and a thorough forensic review of the scene on NW Braid Drive, the Bend Police Department has shed light on the mechanics of the fall, the targeted nature of the crime, and the critical safety aspects surrounding the homeowner and witnesses involved.
Investigation Findings and the Balcony Fall
The investigation, led by Bend Police detectives, confirmed that 36-year-old Zachary Dale Zamzow Douglas died from trauma sustained during a fall from a second-story balcony at a home in the 3500 block of NW Braid Drive. Investigators determined that the fall occurred during a close-quarters struggle between Douglas and the homeowner. Forensic evidence at the scene indicated that the balcony railing gave way or the suspect lost his footing during the physical altercation, causing him to plunge to the ground below. Detectives also verified that no firearms were involved in the encounter, ruling out initial concerns about gunfire in the quiet neighborhood.
A key finding from the police investigation is that this was not a random burglary. Authorities stated that Douglas appeared to have targeted this specific residence, and detectives are actively investigating the pre-existing relationship between the suspect and the homeowner. This targeted nature has helped ease fears among Awbrey Butte residents who were concerned about random, violent home invasions in the area.
Homeowner Safety and Witness Support
The homeowner, whose identity has been withheld for privacy and safety reasons, suffered physical injuries during the fight but has since been released from St. Charles Bend hospital. Beyond the physical recovery, local victim advocates and community support networks are working with the resident to address the psychological trauma of the home invasion. Bend Police emphasized that the homeowner acted in self-defense during the breach. Neighbors and witnesses who heard the disturbance have cooperated with police, providing security footage that helped map the suspect's final path toward the Awbrey Glen Golf Course, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
In light of the incident, local law enforcement reminded residents of the importance of home security systems, outdoor lighting, and neighborhood communication networks. "While this was a targeted incident with no ongoing threat to the general public, it highlights the importance of maintaining secure home perimeters and watching out for one's neighbors," a Bend Police representative stated.
