Two Suspects Charged After Grocery Store Theft and Pepper-Spraying of Employee
CHARLESTON, S.C. โ A shoplifting incident escalated into violence at a Charleston grocery store, resulting in multiple charges for two suspects. The confrontation occurred when the suspects allegedly used chemical spray on a store worker who attempted to stop them.
Theft Confrontation Turns Violent
According to Charleston police, the two suspects attempted to steal items from the grocery store. When a store employee confronted them near the exit, one of the suspects produced pepper spray and discharged it at the worker to facilitate their escape. The suspects then fled the scene with the stolen merchandise.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the store to assist the injured employee, who suffered from severe irritation but did not require hospitalization. The incident was captured on the store's security system.
Surveillance Video Leads to Arrests
Charleston detectives reviewed the surveillance video, which clearly captured the theft and the assault on the employee. The footage was utilized to identify and track down the suspects. Both individuals have since been arrested and face charges of shoplifting, assault and battery, and strong-arm robbery.
