Pattern of Smash-and-Grab Thefts Plagues Sunvalley Mall in Concord

CONCORD, California — Concord's Sunvalley Shopping Center has become the focal point of a coordinated law enforcement response following a series of dramatic smash-and-grab robberies occurring over the last two years.

The crime wave began gaining significant public attention in late November 2024 when a group of suspects brandishing hammers entered the mall, smashed displays, and fled with high-value goods. Since then, similar incidents have occurred, including a notable heist on Valentine's Day in 2026, which led to the arrest of eight individuals accused of ransacking retail stores.

In May 2026, police responded to yet another incident where suspects broke display glass and fled into waiting vehicles. In response to these recurring events, the Concord Police Department has increased patrols around the mall corridor and is working closely with mall security to deploy advanced monitoring systems.

“These organized retail crime crews operate with speed and aggression, creating unsafe environments for shoppers and employees alike,” a Concord police representative stated. While multiple suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with these incidents, investigations remain active as detectives track down remaining members of these organized crime rings.
