ATM Jackpotting Heist: Thieves Steal $175,000 From Fairfax Credit Union
FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA โ In a highly coordinated cyber-physical heist, thieves managed to steal approximately $175,000 from a credit union automated teller machine (ATM) in Fairfax County. Police have identified the method of theft as 'ATM jackpotting,' a sophisticated technique where criminals gain physical access to the machine's internal components to install malware or hardware that forces the machine to continuously dispense cash.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the theft occurred over a period of several hours on November 17, 2025. The suspects, whose identities remain under investigation, targeted the credit union ATM during the night, executing the operation with precision to avoid triggering immediate security alarms. The breach was only discovered hours later when bank officials noticed discrepancies in the ATM's cash levels and reported the incident to law enforcement.
ATM jackpotting has become an increasing concern for financial institutions nationwide. The technique typically requires the culprits to disguise themselves as service technicians or use keys to unlock the outer casing of the ATM, allowing them to connect a laptop or mobile device to the machine's internal computer system. Once the connection is established, they execute commands that empty the cash cassettes.
โThis was not a simple smash-and-grab; it was a highly organized crime requiring specialized technical knowledge,โ said an investigator. Detectives are currently analyzing surveillance video from the credit union and neighboring properties, as well as digital logs from the ATM, in search of clues. Anyone with information about suspicious activity near the credit union ATM during the night of the heist is asked to contact Fairfax County Police.
