LMPD Clears Kentucky Home Life Building 'in Complete Disarray' After Reported Break-Ins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A massive police operation in downtown Louisville saw dozens of officers clear and secure the historic, vacant Kentucky Home Life Building, which authorities described as being in complete disarray following a wave of break-ins and a hazardous gas leak.

Massive Tactical Sweep

On Friday, April 25, 2025, more than 40 officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) donned protective gear and entered the 20-story structure located at the corner of 5th Street and Jefferson Street. The tactical sweep was aimed at securing the boarded-up building and locating any trespassers. While no suspects were found inside during the Friday afternoon sweep, officers discovered extensive damage, specialized tools, and piles of discarded metal debris.

Copper Thefts Cause Gas Leak and Evacuations

The police intervention was triggered by ongoing safety concerns. On the day prior to the sweep, police arrested two individuals caught inside the building trying to strip copper wiring. According to LMPD Major Bryan Edelen, copper thieves had cut into live natural gas lines within the building earlier in the week. This caused a severe natural gas leak that forced emergency crews to evacuate nearby downtown streets and buildings. Major Edelen described the interior of the historic high-rise as "in complete disarray," calling it a "nasty" environment due to years of neglect and vandalism.

Historic Building Struggles with Vandalism

The Kentucky Home Life Building, built in 1912 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been vacant for several years. It has repeatedly presented security challenges for city leaders and property owners. The city has ordered the property owners to increase security, board up ground-floor access points, and install cameras to prevent further illegal entry and hazardous incidents in the heart of downtown Louisville.
