72-Year-Old Loveland Man Arrested After Machete Home Invasion and DUI High-Risk Stop
LOVELAND, Colorado โ A 72-year-old Loveland resident is facing multiple felony charges, including first-degree burglary with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence, after allegedly breaking into a home with a machete and long gun before fleeing the scene.
Intruder Disarmed by Residents
The incident occurred on February 2, 2024, around 1:00 p.m. at a residence on W. 9th Street, near Lake Loveland. According to the Loveland Police Department, the suspect, identified as Gregory Herzog, entered the home dressed in black and carrying a duffle bag containing a partially visible long gun. Herzog was also armed with a machete.
Two female residents inside the home confronted Herzog. During a tense struggle, one of the women managed to disarm the 72-year-old suspect. Fearing for their lives, both women fled the residence and ran to a neighbor's house to call 911. Police officers and SWAT units arrived shortly after, establishing a perimeter around the home under the assumption that the suspect was barricaded inside.
High-Risk Traffic Stop and Arrest
A search of the property revealed that Herzog had fled prior to police arrival. A short time later, dispatchers received a Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately (REDDI) call reporting an erratic driver in the area. Officers located the vehicle, matching the description of the suspect's car, on Highway 287.
Loveland Police conducted a high-risk traffic stop and took Herzog into custody without further incident. Herzog was booked into the Larimer County Jail and faces charges of first-degree burglary with a deadly weapon and DUI. A judge set his bond at $10,000 cash-only.
