Yale New Haven Hospital Employees Raise Safety Concerns Following String of Vehicle Break-Ins

NEW HAVEN, CT — Health care workers and staff members at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) are raising serious safety and security concerns following a recent surge in vehicle break-ins within employee-designated parking garages.

Over the past week, multiple hospital employees returning to their vehicles at the conclusion of late-night and early-morning shifts have discovered shattered car windows and ransacked interiors. The targeted parking structures, which are meant to provide a secure space for staff, have instead become a focal point of anxiety for workers who frequently walk to their vehicles alone during off-peak hours.

"It is incredibly stressful to finish a long, exhausting shift caring for patients and walk out to find your vehicle vandalized and your personal belongings stolen," said one nurse, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "We need to know that we are safe when we come to work."

In response to the growing concern, Yale New Haven Hospital administration released a statement acknowledging the incidents and outlining immediate steps to address the situation. YNHH security services are collaborating with the New Haven Police Department to increase patrol presence in and around all parking facilities. Additionally, the hospital plans to fast-track upgrades to its surveillance cameras and install brighter LED lighting in darker, less-visible areas of the garages. Police are advising employees to secure their vehicles and ensure no bags, electronics, or valuables are visible from the outside.
