Omaha Police Chief Warns of 'Disturbing Trend' After Officers Exchange Gunfire With Burglary Suspect
OMAHA, Nebraska โ Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer expressed deep concern during a press conference on Thursday, highlighting what he called a "disturbing trend" after local officers exchanged gunfire with a burglary suspect. The incident has drawn attention to the escalating dangers faced by law enforcement officers on patrol.
According to police reports, the encounter took place on October 16, 2025. Officers responded to a burglary in progress when they encountered an armed suspect. The situation escalated rapidly, culminating in an active exchange of gunshots between the suspect and responding officers. Fortunately, no officers were reported injured during the shootout.
Chief Addresses Rising Violence
During the briefing, Chief Schmaderer spoke candidly about the incident, emphasizing that suspects are becoming increasingly willing to use lethal force when confronted by police. He described this shift as part of a broader, more worrying pattern in local crime dynamics.
"We are seeing a disturbing trend where individuals are not only carrying firearms during property crimes, but are actively choosing to engage officers," Schmaderer stated. "This level of violence is unacceptable, and we are fortunate that none of our officers were injured today."
Ongoing Investigation and Accountability
The suspect was taken into custody following the shooting and faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder of a police officer and burglary. Per standard operating procedure, the officers involved in the exchange of gunfire will be placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation is conducted.
The Omaha Police Department continues to gather evidence, including body-worn camera footage and witness testimonies, to construct a complete timeline of the events. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Omaha Police Department.
