Three Arrested in Connection with Pinecrest Vehicle Burglary Spree
A proactive police patrol and the use of automated license plate readers led to the arrest of three men suspected of carrying out a string of smash-and-grab vehicle burglaries in Pinecrest, Florida. The suspects have been identified as 22-year-old Terrance Beron Sills and 18-year-old Jayden Cereus, both from Fort Lauderdale, and 18-year-old Kevin Peeples of Miami.
The Traffic Stop and Discovery
The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday when Pinecrest officers received a "Be On The Lookout" (BOLO) alert for a gray Honda Accord. The vehicle had been previously linked to multiple vehicle burglaries in the area and was recently detected by the village's automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras. An officer successfully located the Honda near Southwest 122nd Street and Southwest 67th Avenue.
Upon spotting the marked police cruiser, the driver, later identified as Cereus, allegedly pulled down a black ski mask, turned off the car’s headlights, and attempted to reverse the vehicle. Officers quickly intervened, stopping the Honda and detaining all three occupants without further incident. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded significant evidence: three automotive window punch tools—devices commonly used by thieves to instantly shatter car windows—along with multiple pairs of gloves and several black ski masks.
Conflicting Stories and Arrests
After being read their Miranda rights, the suspects provided investigators with conflicting and implausible explanations for their presence in Pinecrest. Peeples claimed they were searching for an Airbnb, though the homeowner of the address he provided stated they were not expecting anyone. Sills, who claimed ownership of the Honda, bizarrely stated he kept the window punch tools simply in case he accidentally locked his keys inside. Cereus claimed they were staying at a hotel over an hour away.
Based on the vehicle's connection to previous crimes, the recovered burglary tools, the attempted evasion, and the suspects' conflicting statements, all three men were arrested. They are each facing charges of possession of burglary tools and loitering or prowling. They were booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond set at $5,100 each.
Preventing Smash-and-Grab Vehicle Thefts
Smash-and-grab vehicle burglaries are fast and destructive. Residents can take proactive steps to make their vehicles less appealing targets:
- Remove All Valuables: The single most effective deterrent is a clean car. Never leave purses, laptops, backpacks, or even loose change visible in the cabin. If thieves see nothing of value, they will likely move on.
- Park Smart: Always park in well-lit, highly trafficked areas. If parking at home, utilize a locked garage if available, or ensure your driveway is well-lit and covered by security cameras.
- Conceal Items Before Arriving: If you must leave items in your trunk, place them there before you reach your final destination. Thieves often watch parking lots to see who is hiding valuables in their trunks.
- Lock Doors and Roll Up Windows: Even a slightly cracked window can provide a thief with the leverage needed to shatter the glass or unlock the door quickly.
