CIRT Launches Investigation After Aggravated Robbery Suspect Dies in Pueblo Police Custody

PUEBLO, Colorado — A Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is conducting a comprehensive investigation after an aggravated robbery suspect passed away while in the custody of the Pueblo Police Department.

The incident began on April 1, 2025, when local law enforcement responded to a report of an aggravated robbery in progress. Officers quickly located and apprehended a male suspect matching the description provided by witnesses. However, shortly after being placed under arrest and taken into police custody, the suspect suffered a medical emergency.

Despite immediate life-saving efforts initiated by responding officers and arriving emergency medical technicians, the suspect was pronounced dead. In compliance with state protocols for deaths occurring in police custody, the Critical Incident Response Team was immediately activated. The CIRT, comprised of investigators from multiple regional law enforcement agencies, will conduct an independent inquiry to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the arrest and subsequent death.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, and the Pueblo County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy to establish the official cause and manner of death.
