Wawa Cashier Pepper-Sprayed During Caught-on-Video Toms River Robbery

TOMS RIVER, New Jersey — Toms River police are hunting for a suspect who pepper-sprayed a cashier during an aggressive robbery at a local Wawa convenience store. The entire incident was captured on video surveillance cameras, which authorities are now using to identify the perpetrator.

The incident occurred late in the evening at the Wawa location along the Jersey Shore in Toms River. Police reports indicate that the suspect entered the store, approached the checkout counter, and suddenly sprayed the cashier in the face with an eye-stinging chemical agent, believed to be pepper spray. The assault temporarily blinded and incapacitated the employee, allowing the robber to grab cash from the register.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene to treat the cashier for eye irritation and chemical burns. Fortunately, the employee did not suffer permanent injuries. The surveillance footage shows the suspect, dressed in dark clothing, fleeing the convenience store on foot immediately after the robbery.

Toms River police have released screenshots of the suspect and are asking members of the public who recognize the individual or have information about the crime to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to the Toms River Police Department's detective division as the search for the suspect continues.
