Apple Disables Stolen iPhones Looted from Los Angeles Retail Stores
LOS ANGELES, CA โ In the wake of recent civil unrest and targeted commercial looting across Los Angeles, Apple has deployed its remote security measures, rendering demonstration iPhones and other devices stolen from its retail outlets completely useless to the perpetrators.
Following incidents where looters broke into multiple Apple Store locations in Southern California around mid-June 2025, the tech giant activated its proprietary tracking and disabling software. Stolen demo units, which run a specialized operating system designed for retail display, automatically lock down and display an on-screen message advising the holder that the device has been disabled, is actively being tracked, and will report its location to local law enforcement authorities.
This remote disabling feature is designed to deter theft by eliminating the resale value of display items. "Stolen Apple demo units have always had limited functionality, but the clear warning messages and tracking features make them virtually worthless on the black market," explained a cybersecurity analyst. Despite these measures, retail thefts remain a major challenge for high-end electronics stores in metropolitan areas.
The Los Angeles Police Department is collaborating with Appleโs internal security teams to utilize the location data emitted by the disabled devices. Investigators hope this tracking technology will lead to the recovery of stolen goods and assist in identifying and prosecuting the individuals involved in the looting operations. Local authorities have reiterated that possessing or attempting to sell stolen merchandise is a serious felony offense.
