Armed robbery at a Lidl supermarket in Cardiff
According to an article published on 5 March 2025 by Walesonline, a man armed with a knife robbed a Lidl supermarket in Cardiff. The incident occurred on 9 November 2024, when Leon Carpin, 34, entered the store and approached a cashier while brandishing a four-inch blade.
Walesonline reports that the defendant, who had concealed his face with a mask, demanded the cashier open the till. The robbery, which took place while the store was full of customers, was captured on both CCTV and a shopper's mobile phone. After taking notes and coins from the till, Carpin fled the scene. He was later arrested at his parents' home.
At a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, Carpin pleaded guilty to robbery, theft of a car, and breach of a restraining order. Recorder Neil Owen-Casey sentenced him to five years and six months imprisonment, describing the defendant's actions as planned and intimidating. In addition to the robbery, the court heard that the defendant had previous convictions for offences including shoplifting and burglary.
Businesses are encouraged to ensure staff are trained in emergency protocols and to maintain functional surveillance systems to deter criminal activity.
