Armed robbery at a pet shop in Gosport

According to an article published on 12 March 2026 by Dailyecho, a pet shop owner in Gosport was involved in an armed robbery. The perpetrator, identified as 17-year-old Robert Weekes, entered the business and pointed a starting pistol at the owner while demanding the contents of the till.

Despite being threatened, the 55-year-old owner resisted the robbery, leading to a physical struggle. After being forced into a back room, the owner escaped and pursued the youth down the street, successfully retrieving the stolen money. Following the incident, the perpetrator contacted the police to turn himself in. When officers later challenged him in the town centre, a struggle ensued during which the imitation firearm was discharged, resulting in a powder burn to an officer's wrist before the suspect was overpowered.

Weekes, who pleaded guilty to robbery, assault, and possession of an imitation firearm, was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment at the Hampshire Assizes. The court noted the perpetrator's history of criminal convictions and his unstable behaviour during the event.

Business owners are encouraged to remain vigilant and ensure that security protocols are in place to protect staff and property.
