Attempted Burglary at Newcastle Family Home Ends in Violence as Intruder is Overpowered and Hospitalised

An attempted burglary at a family home in the West End of Newcastle took a dramatic turn when the homeowner confronted and overpowered a serial offender who was holding a saw, leaving the intruder requiring hospital treatment before his arrest.

The incident occurred on the night of December 12, 2025, at a ground-floor flat situated on Dilston Road in Newcastle. The victims, a couple and their three children, were asleep at the time of the break-in. Newcastle Crown Court heard that the mother was asleep in a bedroom alongside her six-year-old son, while her husband slept in the living room with their other two children.

Confrontation in the Bedroom

The peace was shattered when the woman awoke to find a stranger, later identified as 39-year-old David Shackleton, looming over her. Shockingly, the intruder was holding a hand saw, which he had taken from the family's own kitchen cupboard. Terrified, the woman screamed and ran into the living room, with Shackleton pursuing her while waving the saw and demanding money.

The woman's husband was awakened by the commotion and immediately intervened to protect his family. A physical struggle ensued between the homeowner and the armed intruder. Shackleton, despite being armed with the saw, was overpowered by the father and sustained significant facial injuries during the altercation. Blood was later found on the homeowner's hands by police officers arriving at the scene.

Arrest and Sentencing

Following the struggle, Shackleton managed to escape from the property, stealing a bicycle from the family to facilitate his flight. However, his freedom was short-lived. Police officers responded swiftly to the report and located Shackleton nearby on Elswick Road. Due to the severity of the facial injuries he sustained during the fight, he had to be transported to a hospital for treatment before he could be formally detained and questioned.

Shackleton, of Yewvale Road, Fenham, Newcastle, has a lengthy criminal record consisting of 74 previous convictions, including seven for prior burglaries. He pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft at Newcastle Crown Court. The presiding judge, Recorder Felicity Davies, sentenced him to three years of imprisonment, noting the severe impact of the crime: "Children were disturbed during the offence and you stood over a sleeping woman with a child with a saw in her bedroom."

During the sentencing hearing, the defence solicitor stated that Shackleton is attempting to address his ongoing substance addiction issues and hopes to turn his life around, expressing remorse for the trauma caused to his victims.
