Attempted robbery at a shop in Wishaw
According to an article published on 12 March 2025 by Glasgowlive, a woman attempted to rob a shop in Wishaw at knifepoint. The incident occurred on 8 June of last year at the Day Today store located on Cambusnethan Street.
Glasgowlive reports that 35-year-old Shareen McKay entered the premises and demanded free alcohol, stating she had no money to pay for the items. After the shopkeeper refused, a struggle ensued over two bottles of alcohol. During the altercation, the accused produced a kitchen knife and threatened the shopkeeper while demanding drink. The shopkeeper was able to grab the hand holding the weapon, and a staff member from a neighbouring store arrived to assist in removing the woman from the shop.
McKay appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday, where she admitted to charges of assault and attempted robbery. Sentencing has been deferred until next month for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment.
Business owners are encouraged to ensure staff are trained in de-escalation techniques and to maintain clear sightlines within the store to improve overall security.
