Attempted Smash-and-Grab at Detroit Check Cashing Business Leaves Safe Behind

DETROIT — Detroit police are investigating an attempted smash-and-grab that took place at a local check cashing business, where the culprits ultimately fled the scene empty-handed, leaving a large safe behind on the sidewalk.

According to authorities, the incident occurred early on October 28, 2025. The suspects utilized a vehicle to crash through the front facade of the business in a targeted effort to steal the building's safe. The force of the impact caused significant structural damage to the storefront, shattering glass and compromising the entrance security systems.

Despite successfully breaching the exterior and dislodging the safe, the thieves encountered difficulties while trying to load the heavy vault into their getaway vehicle. Realizing they were running out of time and likely to draw police attention, the perpetrators abandoned the safe on the ground outside and sped away.

Investigators are analyzing surveillance footage from the business and neighboring establishments to identify the vehicle used in the crash and track down the suspects.
