Aurora Man Charged with Home Invasion and Domestic Battery After Police Pursuit
AURORA, IL โ A violent home invasion in Aurora has resulted in a host of felony and misdemeanor charges against a 26-year-old local resident following a dramatic police pursuit late Sunday night.
The suspect, identified as Nimai Fernandez-Oropeza, faces severe charges including felony home invasion, felony criminal trespass to a residence, two felony counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, and four misdemeanor counts of domestic battery. Additionally, he has been charged with interfering with the reporting of domestic violence, criminal damage to property, and multiple traffic violations.
According to the Aurora Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Wood Street at approximately 11:13 p.m. on September 15, 2024, following reports of domestic violence. Authorities reported that Fernandez-Oropeza unlawfully entered the home, where he allegedly assaulted an adult woman. When a young boy attempted to intervene to protect the victim, Fernandez-Oropeza struck him as well, before causing significant property damage inside the home.
Following the physical altercation, Fernandez-Oropeza fled the scene in a black Dodge Durango. Officers quickly located the SUV and initiated a traffic stop, but the driver fled recklessly. For public safety reasons, the pursuit was terminated. Another nearby jurisdiction also attempted to halt the vehicle but was forced to call off the chase due to safety concerns.
Approximately 30 minutes later, Aurora police spotted the suspect vehicle near Andover Lane and Middlebury Drive. Fernandez-Oropeza was taken into custody without further incident. Kane County court records indicate he is scheduled for a status call on Friday, September 26.
In a statement, Aurora Police Chief Matthew Thomas praised the victims and the responding officers: "This was a dangerous and violent situation that escalated quickly and put a family at serious risk. Our officers acted decisively to identify the suspect, coordinate with surrounding agencies, and bring him into custody safely."
