An unusual and highly calculated package theft occurred in a residential neighborhood of Irvine, California, in November 2024, prompting local authorities to urge caution among online shoppers. A suspect successfully intercepted a high-value delivery by posing as the homeowner and signing for the package directly on the street.

A Sophisticated Porch Piracy Tactic

The incident occurred on November 22, 2024, when a UPS driver was approached by a man pacing near a residence. The suspect, wearing a white shirt, claimed to be the homeowner expecting an expensive delivery. To validate his claim, the thief presented a photo identification card that matched the homeowner's name and address listed on the delivery slip. Confident in the identification, the driver allowed the suspect to sign for the package—which contained a brand new Apple MacBook—before the suspect drove away in an awaiting vehicle.

Previous Attempt Flagged by Delivery Driver

The victim, Sylvons Iyavoo, learned about the deception shortly after. The driver, returning to the street, asked Iyavoo about the man who had just signed for the package. It was then revealed that the same suspect had attempted to stop the UPS truck two streets away earlier that day. During that first encounter, the driver had refused to hand over the parcel, stating it had to be delivered to the specific address. Undeterred, the thief followed the truck to the victim's street to execute the theft.
