Bridgeport Taqueria Hit by ATM Burglars in Swift Security Footage Heist

CHICAGO, IL — Surveillance video captured a rapid early morning burglary at Taqueria San Jose, a local Mexican restaurant in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood, where thieves managed to steal an ATM in just about two minutes.

The incident occurred on May 3, 2026, at the restaurant located on South Halsted Street. According to police and restaurant staff, the burglars forced entry through the front entrance, shattering the glass and making a direct path toward the ATM. The security footage shows the suspects working together to aggressively tear the machine from its anchors.

Once the ATM was dislodged, the suspects hauled it out of the restaurant and loaded it into a waiting SUV parked right outside. The entire break-in was characterized by its speed and precision, lasting roughly two minutes before the vehicle sped away. Restaurant management expressed frustration over the incident, noting the extensive damage to the entryway and the disruption to their business operations.

The Chicago Police Department is reviewing the surveillance video to identify the suspects and the getaway vehicle. No arrests have been made, and detectives are asking anyone with information regarding the burglary on South Halsted Street to contact police.
