Burglar jailed after returning to Cardiff home

Residential burglary in Cardiff

According to an article published on 19 June 2025 by Walesonline, a burglar who returned to a property he had targeted to retrieve his belongings has been sentenced to two years in prison. The incident occurred on Friday, February 7, on Pontcanna Street in Cardiff.

Walesonline reports that Said Hassan, 39, and an accomplice forced entry into a private home and began taking items from the kitchen. When confronted by the residents, the intruders fled the scene. Shortly after, Hassan returned to the property to ask for personal items he had left behind during his escape. The residents refused his request and contacted South Wales Police.

Although the suspects had left by the time officers arrived, police successfully identified Hassan using retrospective facial recognition technology after reviewing CCTV footage from a nearby Co-op. Hassan pleaded guilty to burglary at Cardiff Crown Court and was sentenced on May 15. South Wales Police noted that this technology, which compares images against a reference database, is increasingly used to identify suspects from various sources, including CCTV and doorbell cameras.

Ensure all entry points to your home are securely locked and consider installing visible security measures to deter potential intruders.
