Burglar Jailed After Stealing £20,000 BMW in Rotherham
ROTHERHAM, South Yorkshire — A burglar who targeted a Rotherham home and made off with a BMW worth £20,000 has been jailed following a swift police investigation.
The defendant broke into the residential property to locate the keys to the premium vehicle before driving it away. The theft triggered a police response, leading to the tracking and eventual recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of the suspect.
Targeted Key Theft
The court heard that the burglar committed a 'hanoi-style' burglary, entering the house with the primary objective of finding the car keys. The homeowners were asleep upstairs when the break-in occurred, only discovering their vehicle was missing when they woke up the following morning. Police investigators utilized ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras and forensic analysis from the property to identify the offender.
"This was a serious invasion of privacy where the offender showed no regard for the homeowners. Stealing high-value vehicles by breaking into homes for the keys is a crime we take extremely seriously, and this sentence reflects that commitment." — South Yorkshire Police Investigative Officer
Custodial Sentence Imposed
The judge sentenced the burglar to a custodial sentence, stating that the public needed protection from active vehicle thieves. The stolen BMW was recovered and returned to its owners, and the conviction has been highlighted by South Yorkshire Police as a warning to other car thieves operating in the area.
