Burglar Targets Elk Grove Home Damaged by Fire Just Hours Prior

ELK GROVE, CA — In a shocking act of opportunism, a suspect was arrested after attempting to burglarize an Elk Grove home that had been severely damaged by a fire just hours before. Neighbors and police worked together to capture the individual before they could escape with any salvaged belongings.

Exploiting a Tragedy

The property had been the site of a devastating structure fire early in the day, leaving the home uninhabitable and its residents temporarily displaced. While the family was away dealing with the aftermath of the disaster, a witness reported seeing a suspicious individual wandering around the perimeter of the charred house.

The suspect allegedly attempted to breach the secured entryway of the home to search for valuables that had survived the flames. Realizing the vulnerability of the property, neighbors kept a close eye and immediately notified the authorities when they observed the intruder trying to break in.

"To target a family that has just lost their home to a fire is incredibly heartless. We are grateful to the neighbors who saw something and said something," an Elk Grove police officer stated.

Suspect Apprehended Nearby

Officers arrived within minutes of the call and located the suspect nearby, carrying tools commonly used for break-ins. The individual was taken into custody without incident and faces charges of attempted burglary, loitering at the scene of a disaster, and possession of burglary tools.
