Burglars Target Cashless Ice Cream Shops in Northwest Austin
A string of commercial burglaries targeting popular Austin eateries has prompted investigations by local law enforcement. Among the businesses hit are the beloved Amy's Ice Creams and Phil's Icehouse in Northwest Austin, with one location suffering two break-ins within the span of a single week.
According to reports from the Austin Police Department and store managers, the perpetrators broke windows and forced entry into the establishments during the late-night and early-morning hours. Surprisingly, the targets of these break-ins operate under cashless business models, meaning very little to no physical currency is ever kept on the premises overnight. Business operators expressed frustration that despite prominent signs indicating a cashless policy, criminals still caused thousands of dollars in property damage to search for non-existent cash registers.
The recurring nature of these break-ins has placed local business owners on high alert, with many calls for increased police patrols in commercial shopping centers. Surveillance footage of the incidents is being reviewed by detectives, and business associations are discussing additional preventative security measures, such as installing security shutters and improving exterior lighting to deter future attempts.
