According to an article published by Chroniclelive on 29 July 2025, a man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary following an incident at a Co-op supermarket in Wylam. Police were called to the premises on Main Street at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, following reports that a quantity of cigarettes had been stolen from behind the counter.

Chroniclelive reports that the store was cordoned off for several hours while forensics officers conducted an investigation at the scene. The supermarket remained closed temporarily during this period but had re-opened to the public by 4:00 p.m. the same day.

Northumbria Police confirmed that a 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody as enquiries continue. A spokesperson for the Co-op stated that the company is working closely with the police regarding the theft. Business owners are encouraged to ensure that high-value inventory is kept in secure, restricted-access areas to deter potential theft.
