Burglary at a private home in Cardiff
DNA evidence leads to conviction in Cardiff burglary
According to an article published on 30 April 2026 by Walesonline, a burglary occurred at a private home in the Cathays area of Cardiff between January 24 and 25. The perpetrator, 28-year-old Shane Sweeney, gained entry to the property while the resident was away, stealing items including a television, two laptops, jewellery, a gold bar, bank cards, and car keys.
Walesonline reports that investigators identified the suspect after discovering a chicken bone on the kitchen table. DNA analysis of the bone matched Sweeney, who initially denied involvement by claiming he did not like chicken. The investigation also confirmed that the victimโs vehicle, a Vauxhall Corsa, was taken during the incident and later recovered in Trowbridge.
Sweeney, who pleaded guilty to the burglary and seven counts of shoplifting committed between November and March, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court. The victim reported significant personal and financial distress following the break-in, which forced her to pause her academic studies. The defendant, who has previous convictions for theft, attributed his actions to external influences and personal hardship.
Always ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked and reinforced to prevent unauthorized entry.
