Burglary at a shop in Harthill

Break-in at Harthill retail premises

According to an article published on 18 April 2026, a shop in Harthill was targeted in a burglary. Glasgowlive reports that two individuals gained entry to the USave shop on Howburn Road by cutting a hole in the ceiling. The perpetrators stole a significant quantity of items, including cigarettes, vaping products, alcohol, and groceries.

During the incident, one of the individuals was captured on CCTV staring directly into the camera. This footage allowed police to identify 34-year-old Michael Mearns, who was subsequently arrested. Mearns admitted to the break-in, which occurred on 8 January 2024. The total value of the stolen goods and the damage caused to the property was estimated at approximately ยฃ14,500. Following proceedings at Hamilton Sheriff Court, Mearns was placed under supervision for 18 months and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work.

Business owners are encouraged to regularly inspect and maintain their security systems, including CCTV and alarm sensors, to ensure optimal functionality.
