Burglary at a supermarket in Whitley Bay
Supermarket targeted in Whitley Bay
According to an article published by Chroniclelive on 20 December 2025, two men were arrested following a burglary at a Sainsbury's supermarket in Whitley Bay. The incident occurred at 4am on 17 December.
Chroniclelive reports that Richard Teague, 34, and Mark Thompson, 57, gained access to a marquee located outside the store by squeezing through a gap in a makeshift fence. The pair proceeded to steal ยฃ560 worth of fizzy drinks, which they loaded into a trolley.
A passing paramedic witnessed the men moving the trolley along the street and alerted the police. Officers subsequently detained Thompson at a nearby Metro station, while Teague was stopped while riding a bike and found in possession of some of the stolen items. Both men appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court, where they pleaded guilty to burglary of a non-dwelling.
The court heard that the goods were recovered following the arrests. Defense counsel noted that the incident was opportunistic, highlighting that the items were stored in a non-solid, makeshift structure.
Business owners should ensure that all external storage areas are secured with robust fencing and monitored by adequate surveillance systems.
