Burglary Suspects Pose as Delivery Driver in Elk Grove Scheme
ELK GROVE, CA — Authorities are warning residents to be vigilant after a burglary ring attempted to use a deceptive delivery driver ruse to target a home in Elk Grove. The Elk Grove Police Department is actively investigating the incident and seeking the public's help to identify the suspects.
A Deceptive Tactic at the Front Door
The incident occurred during daylight hours when a suspect wearing clothing resembling a package delivery uniform approached the front door of a residence, carrying a dummy package. Home surveillance footage captured the suspect knocking on the door while accomplices waited nearby in a getaway vehicle, prepared to breach the home if it appeared unoccupied.
Fortunately, the homeowner was alert and did not open the door, instead interacting through a smart doorbell camera. Realizing they were being recorded and that the residence was occupied, the suspects aborted the plot and fled the scene.
"This incident serves as a crucial reminder to verify the identity of any delivery personnel and to never open your door to individuals you do not recognize or expect," police officials warned.
Home Security Systems Play Key Role
Investigators are analyzing the clear security footage captured by the homeowner’s camera system to identify the suspect’s face and the vehicle’s license plate. The police department is encouraging neighbors in the area to check their own security footage for any suspicious vehicles resembling a dark SUV seen idling in the neighborhood around the time of the event.
