Burnt-Out Car Discovered After Duo Smashes Windows at Bishop Auckland Shop

BISHOP AUCKLAND — Police have launched an investigation after a vehicle was found burnt out shortly after a pair of suspects smashed the windows of a local shop in Bishop Auckland and fled the scene.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when witnesses reported seeing two individuals targeting the shopfront, causing extensive damage to the windows. The perpetrators fled the scene in a getaway vehicle before police could arrive.

Shortly after the attack, emergency services were called to a nearby location where a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car was found engulfed in flames. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, and the vehicle has been recovered for forensic testing. Police believe the car was intentionally set on fire to destroy evidence and cover the tracks of the culprits.

Durham Constabulary is treating the two incidents as linked. A police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for information following criminal damage to a shop in Bishop Auckland and the subsequent discovery of a burnt-out vehicle. This appears to have been a deliberate and targeted act. We are currently reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to local residents."
