Cable theft disrupts railway services in Shenfield
Railway infrastructure targeted in Shenfield
According to an article published on 19 October 2025 by the BBC, signalling cables have been stolen from near a major railway junction in Shenfield, Essex. This incident marks the second consecutive weekend that such theft has occurred in the area.
The BBC reports that the theft resulted in a loss of signalling, which blocked lines and caused significant disruption to rail services. Greater Anglia advised passengers not to travel between Shenfield and London Liverpool Street, with the closure affecting routes from Norwich, Ipswich, Clacton-on-Sea, and Southend-on-Sea, as well as the Elizabeth line between Stratford and Shenfield. Train services had returned by mid-morning after Network Rail engineers completed temporary repairs.
Greater Anglia has confirmed that passengers experiencing delays of more than 15 minutes are eligible to claim compensation. Shenfield remains a major junction for services, including those on the Great Eastern Main Line.
Ensure that all critical infrastructure and utility access points are secured with high-grade locking mechanisms and monitored by surveillance systems to deter unauthorized access.
